When we talk about windsurfing in La Manga del Mar Menor we are talking about relaxed windsurfing in a place with lots of party and wonderful atmosphere. With more than 20 km of coastline, a sleeve of coast makes a safe inside sailing place in front of the Mediterranean (from there it comes its name), in this inside sea you can find lots of perfect sailing places. From beginner spots in front of its multiple schools, to the crossing sailing to the different islands that grow around this sea. Thanks to its geographical location and its sailing qualities, this sea attracts people from everywhere to sail, but mainly you can find locals and people from the center of the country. Not only the inside waters offer the sailor perfect sailing conditions, the Mediterranean side of the Manga is sometimes a perfect wave spot, basically San Pedro and Cabo Palos.
Close to the city of Murcia. It is an area 20 km long per 10 km wide full of little islands. You can get there through the road that goes around the Mediterranean sea.
The Mar Menor is an overall sailing place. From the beginner that jumps to a windsurf board for the very first time, to the short board windsurfer, in between you find very good raceboard conditions too; everyone will find there perfect suiting conditions for his or her level. Around its coasts, there are an unlimited number of schools for the beginner and the advanced windsurfer. Its conditions with light winds early in the morning and its depth near the beach (only one meter) will make it suitable for anyone to learn in just a few days. "It is the perfect place for all those who already windsurf and want their friends to jump into his passion sport, it is not only an all experts place", says Paco Delgado, manager of El Galán Windsurfing school and one of the pioneers of windsurfing in the area. The fact is that being able to make foot in all schools in the area make this place "the best bathing pool of the world", as Pieter van Driel from the International Sailing School says. "Here anyone can learn windsurfing very easily"he says. The place can offer the expert sailor, the chance to discover a place with special characteristics. The Leveche wind can blow up to force 5-6, make this sea perfect for all those who want to improve their jibe, start the waterstart o start their jumping sessions. Not to mention the sight of the little islands that makes you wanna discover the crossing sensations.
When Leveche wind is blowing any place around is a good place to sail, but there are a few places that gather all the windsurfing atmosphere, like windsurfing schools and sailing clubs. And depending on the intensity and direction of the wind you will have to find the place that better suits your level, taking into account that the south of the Manga is the place that the wind gets stronger. When the wind is not the Leveche, locals have discovered other sailing places to windsurf. The area hides small pearls that only locals through the years have been discovering, like Lo Pagan a perfect speed run with strong Levante, or the wave spot at Cabo Palos or San Pedro also with Levante, or the perfect wave formed at the Faro del Norte, etc.
Sailing at La Manga is mainly with light winds. Rarely you will rig a sail smaller than 4.5, and normally we will be in the water with 6 or 7 sp. m. Boards, apart from the raceboards that have here its working field with the crossing to the different small islands around, volume windsurf racing boards is the gear you will normally launch, but in the good days a short windsurfer will do the trick.
The king is Leveche. Termal wind that picks up on midday and increases its intensity during the sun’s race along the sky, to later drop with sunset. It can blow as strong as force 6, however its normal intensity is force 3 to 4. It uses to blow from the South or Southwest, as it tents to role westerly with the sun. When at night blows from the North you can be sure that the following day the Leveche will show up to the appointment. The best season is spring -stronger and more regular-. During the summer it tends to be lighter and during autumn and winter it alternates with some Levante depressions.
An endless number of schools for the beginner and various shops where to renew broken gear or buy the latest in windsurfwear, are located primarily on its coasts. Each one of them has its own windsurfing equipment rental, and your only doubt will be choosing one to go.
Big hotels, aparthotels and apartments fill La Manga from side to side, but if you are looking for something "cooler" some campsites and other types of lodging are spread over La Manga.
The area concentrates incredible nightlife. After flying during the day it is your turn to do it by night. Restaurants, bars, terraces and clubs, all you need to have the blast of your lifetime. From a beer or a coffee in a quiet terrace, to the out of control night, in here you will find more than you wanted.
The lodging infrastructures, combined with the wind conditions are a guaranty of success for the organization of any activity. From PBA Spain events to Raceboard championships, going through an endless number of small local competitions, you can be sure when coming to La Manga that the heat will be on."
